Become a sponsor to Jeremy Jackson

Hi, I'm Jeremy! I've contributed to a lot of open source projects over the years, and find it provides a deep sense of purpose for me, but doesn't supplement my income very much. That's great, and I've never tried to find anything other than enjoyment from those hours, but after being recently laid off I was curious if there's an opportunity for both.

What I'm working on right now:

  • An experimentation library for Ruby (and Rails) named ActiveExperiment
Background: While working on the growth team at GitLab, I was fortunate enough to focus on experimentation. In a lot of organizations the tooling would be something along the lines of dropping in LaunchDarkly or similar, but at GitLab (being an open source company) we prioritized visibility and avoided storing data in third party systems. From that experience I was able to form a deep understanding of how a team can approach experimentation, and was able to distill that knowledge into ActiveExperiment.

What I want to work on next:

  • Tooling for Rails to take advantage of Temporal.io workflows and activities (ActionWorkflow maybe?)
Background: Temporal.io is a pretty compelling project and concept -- not just in how different service layers can communicate with each other, but in how a series of complex actions can be taken within one application. I could talk about this for hours, but the overall strategy will be to explore the current (unofficial but great) coinbase/temporal-ruby project, and build an ActiveJob queue adapter for it (in very simplistic terms). After that, I envision creating Rails generators for workflows and activities, and solid implementations of base ApplicationWorkflow and ApplicationActivity classes, and a good test framework.

Why should you contribute to my work?

I'm an engineer, not a salesperson, so I can't justify things like that for you. I focus on doing good work, mentoring people, being an empathetic leader, and implementing solid engineering decisions. If this seems like something you'd enjoy being a part of, and even being able to see into -- hey, I would deeply appreciate your support. It would also be great to supplement a bit of my income working on the things I love while looking for a new FT gig. =)

I'm also seeking Engineering Manager or Staff+ Individual Contributor roles, and find a sense of purpose in servant leadership as well as contributing to projects directly.

Thank you! ✨
