Problem

Our use of ifconfig.co was an early-days quick hack that shouldn't live on because

  1. relying on some random other service for such a critical part of bootstraping a node isn't great
  2. It has created problems for us: panic when pinging ifconfig.co on the perf testnet #936 IPv6 address in gossip? #4095

Proposed Solution

  • Minimal solution: send a "whoami" packet to the network entrypoint (gossip based?)
  • libp2p? cc: NAT hardening #496
