When the dark mode is not enabled, Spotlight is white in color, black icons are good looking in that. Since an app can't have two icons, it can be either black/white. I guess most use dark mode 😛 So, I'd go with white icons too. 👍

It is possible to create icons that work well for both dark and light environments using clever shading and a lightness of ≈50%. Checkout how Apple recently updated their emoji:
