Importing large data sets can take a while to run.  Code profiling indicates 
that most of the time is spent in the add_element and add_sub_element methods.  

It should be possible to reduce this time by collating the data and then adding 
them as a batch job, e.g. once per tile in the raster imports, and once per 
line set in the text and shapefile imports.
