Custom segment invokation and performance

I've created a custom segment and it's working just fine but I'm trying to understand something pls:

1. When it gets called? On every new shell I open? Could it be run only when I invoke some specific commands?

My personal mac device runs smoothly but my company one is not a blazing fast machine so I'm trying to optmize the performance the best I can so the less I call this function (and it's shell commands) the better.

Custom prompt segments run every time prompt needs to be rendered. That's at least once for every command you run in an interactive zsh.

Before trying to make your prompt segment faster, make sure it'll make a difference to you. The best way is to replace the segment with a hard-coded p10 segment -t '...' and try to see if you came make a difference w.r.t. prompt latency. If you do, and you care about this difference, go ahead and make your segment faster by whatever means you can devise.

Caching? that sounds interesting..

Interesting that using the azure "native" p10k segment doesn't impact the performance but if I create custom commands running az cli commands this kills my performance.

I'm still working on my segments but your caching suggestion cleared things out for me. Taking advantage of an already existing cache created automatically by az cli I added this to my segment:

  subName=$(jq '.subscriptions[]| select(.isDefault == true) | .name' ~/.azure/azureProfile.json| sed 's/"//g')

I didn't do much validation before reading this file locally as I'll always be connected so I didn't bother.

I'm focusing now on how to cache other information .. now I know how to avoid this slowness issue I faced before.
