Hello everyone, we are happy to say that we have found a fix for widespread issues affecting audio output due to a broken PipeWire package.

To apply this hotfix, please first upgrade your system with:

rpk update -y

Then, to apply the hotfix, run:

rhino-hotfix PipeWire
  • You can also run rhino-hotfix and select it from the list of available hotfixes.

We will leave this hotfix issue active until the issues affecting PipeWire packaging have been resolved.

Important

We recommend users get into the habit of running the command rhino-hotfix to query for available hotfixes distributed by the Rhino Linux team every so often. You can also join our Discord Community to get notified about active hotfixes.

Will more details be forthcoming on what this pipewire sound problem is, how to identify if one is affected, and what the patch does? I understand that "our hotfixes are solely bash scripts, so they can be easily reviewed by members of our community," however, linking to that script in this issue would be a more direct way to inspect it than trying to dig it out of a new utility.

It should be fairly easy to notice if you are affected as audio output will not be working.

The issue was caused by Ubuntu shipping untested patches to PipeWire packages relating to snap. This hotfix bumps those packages to the Debian versions which do not have these issues.

Initially we wanted to keep the information short and to the point to get the point across, however I don't disagree that a link would be beneficial to provide, and I can provide one later to the hotfix script, however at the moment it is a bit inconvenient as I am on mobile.
