The AVIF image format offers significant file size reduction for lossy images compared with JPEG and even WebP.
And the AVIF support has been integrated into popular browsers and other software applications.
But Github doesn't support that file type yet.

The AVIF image offers significant file size reduction so that network transmission will be faster than PNG/JPEG images.

What to check? The AVIF is not mentioned in the document.

I wonder why GitHub won't add support for WebP or AVIF. Both are supported by all browsers.

Screenshots of high-DPI displays are too large if compressed with PNG (current).
WebP lossy changes some colors in them.
AVIF is the best.
