I downloaded files before reading about the extractor archive option, and now I would like to use that option without redownloading everything, is that possible? Currently if the files are in their original location they are skipped, but if I move them they will be redownloaded, and only after that will they stop being redownloaded.

Use -s/--simulate and run gallery-dl with the same URLs again . This won't download anything, but all files will be added to your archive as if they had been successfully downloaded.
(I know this is quite unintuitive and also not documented anywhere. This behavior will most likely change once #220 gets implemented)
That works, thanks. btw another download helper I used has a single archive file for all galleries, which only tracks the latest timestamp of a gallery; that's enough for my purposes.
