No network connectivity WSL 2 (not DNS/firewall related?)

Repro Steps

Upon fresh reinstall of WSL2 and Ubuntu 22.04 (although was identical for 18.04 previously), running
ping google.com
or
sudo apt-get update
fails (whether from command prompt with elevated privileges or not) as network cannot apparently be reached (see below).

I have seen various similar issues posted online which relate to the DNS lookup and /etc/resolv.conf and the WSL config /etc/wsl.conf. I've tried modifying these (e.g. to use the nameserver at 8.8.8.8) in the ways suggested, but still have no luck.

This is a home machine, and there are no enterprise firewalls or anything like that getting in the way.

Expected Behavior

Ping and Ubuntu package update as normal

Actual Behavior

For the ping, hangs on:
PING google.com (142.250.180.14) 56(84) bytes of data.

Following #8365 (comment) (i.e. upgrading WSL to pre-release and enabling the experimental networking mode fixed the problem for me :)
