A newspaper polls members of two political parties to measure their position on a newly proposed law. The polled participants either Support, are Neutral, or Oppose the proposed law:
Use a \(\chi^2\) independence test to test whether position on this law is independent of party affiliation.
State the null hypothesis for this test.
Position on this law is independent of party affiliation.
State the alternative hypothesis for this test.
Position on this law is dependent on party affiliation.
Using complete sentences, state the meaning of the p-value in the context of this problem.
The p-value is the probability that position on this law is independent of party affiliation based on the sample data that we are studying.

If alpha = 0.05 we fail to reject the null hypothesis because our p-value is larger than alpha. If alpha = 0.10 we reject the null hypothesis because our p-value is less than alpha.
