We should use a consistent unix tutorial each year, building on what we learned the previous year.

Some things we learned this year:

  • Students generally struggle with VI or any terminal-based text editor. We should avoid teaching this, allowing them to use a graphical text editor instead.
  • The tutorial should be a file students can work through, clearly laid out, independent of what the teacher is doing.
  • There should be clear units to work through.
  • The teacher should wait for everyone to reach the end of the current unit before moving on.
  • Students are very unwilling to ask for help. We need a way to make it easy for them to get help.
  • There needs to be a way to measure whether people are stuck, or have finished. Ideally automated, but could be a physical solution.

I think we should work from this document: https://github.com/jelena121/NGS_analysis_icipe/blob/master/day%202/unix_primer.pdf

And improve it iteratively each year.
