This is a ship with a self stabilizing platform. It allows the crew to easily transfer to e.g. an oil platform, even during rough weather. This video was my inspiration.
It made it with Lego Mindstorms 4 Robot Invertor. However, I had to add two extra parts 32293 Black Technic, Link 1 x 9 from my Mindstorms NXT.
For fun, I also added some minifigs, but those are less crucial for the built 😀.
The below steps only give you the platform. You can built the entire ship with the mindstorms 4 box (but not the rig). Also, as mentioned, there are two crucial extra parts 32293 Black Technic, Link 1 x 9.
Step 1.01 The pivot of the platform...
Step 1.03 Extending the pivot of the platform ...
Step 1.05 Making the platform square ...
Step 1.07 A sub assembly for the platform pillar ...
Step 1.09 ... and connecting the pillar to the platform.
Step 2.01 The motor holders bracket ...
Step 2.03 Adding the other brackets ...
Step 2.04 ... and two large frames ...
Step 2.07 ... with two pins for wire clips.
Step 3.01 The pitch motor with wire clip ...
Step 3.03 ... and arm adjusted.
Step 3.05 ... mounting on frame ...
Step 3.06 ... and wire clip fixed.
Step 4.01 The roll motor with two wire clips ...
Step 4.03 ... and arm adjusted.
Step 4.05 ... mounting on frame ...
Step 4.06 ... and wire clips fixed.
Step 5.01 Adding the platform ...
Step 5.02 ... by attaching the platform pillar to the roll motor ...
Step 5.03 ... rotating the motor arms and attaching the links to the platform.
You can built the entire ship with the mindstorms 4 box (and some minifigs). But I did not make instructions. Here are some pictures from different angles.
Here is the ship with an oil rig. For this you need extra lego.
In the directory prog you find the file that you can open in the mindstorms app.
This program is writte in Python. For the reader's convenience I have included the Python source. I hope to keep them in sync!
