Where can we find the complete groups listing? #70
Comments
I've never been sure if the users of smaller groups would want their groups to be findable, but now decisions like this aren't up to me. All development decisions for Guppe will now be made by those who support the project on Open Collective: https://opencollective.com/guppe-groups Would love to have you join and propose it in the member's group |
It is really hard to find a group. A list would be very helpful. Very handy would be a search field to enter keywords too. |
Since https://a.gup.pe/ shows a list of the top 50 groups, it actually highlights why either a directory or being able to search for groups (without creating new ones and thus muddying things further) would be really helpful: As at the 1st Feb 2024, the most recent / most active group is: "Bookstodon". Having seen a few other groups, I might have guessed to add the "stodon" but a lot of people might just try to find "@Books@a.gup.pe". Less obviously, if you want to find posts sent to a group about autism, the most active group isn't @autisticstodon@a.gup.pe or similar - it's @ActuallyAutistic@a.gup.pe. Some of the next most popular groups are "fantasy", "synths", "photography" in the one word category, "MutualAid", "WeirdFolks", and "IndieAuthors" in the joined words. And next to each other in the list are "Psychology", "SocialPsych", "Psychotherapist", "Psychotherapists" and "Psychiatry", which I'd be pretty sure were created by people who didn't realise the other groups existed and so we have three communities on that topic, who might be really interested in what the other groups post, but may not be aware they exist. Meanwhile just looking through that list is fascinating, and I'm sure there are just as interesting groups which AREN'T in the top 50 busiest groups, which are currently impossible to find unless you happen. Of that top 50 as it is today, only 21 are one single word or acronym (like "nfl", meaning 29 of the top 50 groups are a combination of words making them instantly harder to guess. |
It would be nice if it were query-able! :) Cheers, thanks for the tool.
