Notifications alert is alerting me for every notification I get. Shouldn't it only notify for chat notifications?

  • This is true on early versions of the extension, where notifications used to be checked for 'counters' and those happen to be 90% chat notifications. Due to lots of requests for supporting notifications sent via 'notify-send' for example, it now alerts for every notification there. If you don't like that and prefer to only be alerted for chat notifications, open the extension settings (you can find it next to the on/off switcher of the extension on extensions.gnome.org) and enable "Only alert for chat notifications". Settings are available for Gnome-shell 3.4 only.

Why is it alerting for notifications that doesn't make sense (like music player) too?.

  • This has something to do with the feature mentioned above. Also, it has been reported that Banshee on Ubuntu 11.10 is doing that (because it wasn't setting it's notification as 'Resident', like Rhythmbox does). This is not true for Ubuntu 12.04 anymore. If you find any other any other weird behavior like that, please, file an issue here providing the name of the program in question that generated the notification.

Why isn't it alerting for some specific notifications?

  • It should be alerting. If it's not, maybe some extension is conflicting...maybe that program is generating a non-default notification. If that is happening to you, please, open an issue here so I can try to find a solution :). Don't forget to provide enough information, like your extensions list, the name of the program in question, gnome-shell version, etc.

How can I configure some behaviors of notifications alert?

  • Starting from Gnome-shell 3.4, notifications alert is configurable. You can configure it opening the settings window at extensions.gnome.org, using the settings button next to the on/off switch. If you are at 3.4+ and can't see the settings button, try reloading the page with F5.

I love your extension! What can I do to help you?

  • I'm happy that you like it! :) Giving my extension a good rating on extension.gnome is enough for making me even happier. If you have programming knowledge and wish to improve notifications alert, just fork it here and send me a pull request ;D
