Works with ZFS on OS X (ZEVO Community Edition from http://www.getgreenbytes.com/zevo/).

Shouldn't date2timestamp also be updated?
Does OsX use GNU date, or FreeBSD compatible one?

I hadn't caught that. OS X uses the bsd compatible date command.
