What sort of differentiation are you after? A wider range of preset avatars? Or better names than "Guest 4124" - more like google's dreaded Anonymous Aardvark stuff?

Something differentiating on the avatar: slightly darker or greyed, or a different way of displaying the initial (eg Italic).
The more I think of it the more I think it would be nice

Perhaps add a pictogram to guest avatars. Privileged users have their shields, and Direct Chats have a person outline. I'm sure one for guests could be designed.
