Related to #100844

Index patterns are being renamed to data views, so all mentions of 'index patterns' in the docs needs to change to 'data views'. Work will be tracked in this meta issue.

@mattkime Is this something that app services is able to do in one pass, or is it necessary for other teams to set aside time to make these updates individually?

@lukeelmers Generally speaking, its necessary for teams to set aside time although Gail and Kaarina are very helpfully pitching in.

👋 @mattkime @gchaps I'm catching up on these changes in elastic/observability-docs#1671, but noticing that there are still mentions of "index pattern" in a couple places in the Observability UI as of v8.1.0 including:

  • Metrics > Settings > Indices > Metric indices
    Screen Shot 2022-03-17 at 4 20 11 PM
  • Uptime > Settings > Indices > Uptime indices
    Screen Shot 2022-03-17 at 4 20 50 PM

Should those references be updated? I'm not sure if I should update the docs referencing these pages or keep them as they are to match the UI. (Also feel free to redirect me if I should be asking somewhere else!)

As best I can tell they're accurate as is - they're referring to index pattern strings rather than a kibana saved object.

@mattkime One thing that's confusing me (and might be confusing to users) is why the Logs UI gives users the option of using data views, but the Metrics and Uptime UIs do not. Maybe that's coming?

@dedemorton Thats a question for the teams that own those apps..
