When upscaling and upgrading (both operation at the same time) from 6.x to 7.x:

  • minimum_master_nodes is cleared from all the configuration of the nodes while there are still some 6.x nodes.
  • in the case of moving from 1 node to 2 nodes there is no update though the API.

This is because UpdateMinimumMasterNodes relies only on the version of Elasticsearch in the next revision of the statefulset, not on the current one.
