Validate utilizes sfdx force:auth:jwt:grant to authenticate to devhub and fetch the scratch org from the pool. Recent update of the cli has deprecated the flag (though its not supposed to be immediate) has made validate unable to login to the fetched scratch org

This is an issue with the recent version of the CLI, sfpowerscripts has now been updated to use sfdx auth instead.

Fixed in 1.6.11
