macOS/Linux Instructions

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for completing required tasks on a computer running Mac or Linux.

Task 1: Identify Your Local Home Directory

For project work, always use your local home directory (/Users/<username> on macOS or /home/<username> on Linux).

Steps

  1. Open Finder (macOS) or your file manager (Linux).
  2. Navigate to your home directory:
    • macOS: /Users/<username>
    • Linux: /home/<username>
  3. Confirm the path in the address bar of your file manager.

Task 2: Create and Organize Folders in Your Home Directory

Organizing files in your home directory ensures they are easily accessible and secure.

Steps

  1. Navigate to your home directory.
  2. Create a new folder:
    • macOS: Right-click, select New Folder, and name it (e.g., Use_This_Home_Folder_YourName).
    • Linux: Right-click, select Create Folder, and name it.

Task 3: Show File Extensions and Hidden Items

Steps

  1. macOS: Press Command + Shift + . (period) to toggle hidden files.
  2. Linux: Press Ctrl + H to show or hide hidden files in most file managers.

Verify

  • Create a hidden file in your home directory (e.g., .yourname).
  • Take a screenshot showing the hidden file visible.

Task 4: OPTIONAL: Set Finder or File Manager Preferences

Customize Finder (macOS) or your file manager (Linux) for quick access.

Steps

  1. macOS: Open Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and add your home directory to the sidebar.
  2. Linux: Adjust your file manager’s settings to show hidden files by default.
