I've tried running the example on ubuntu. No errors, no icon, no nothing.

Any ideas?

Same on 16.04 LTS with Unity.

It appears as though Unity restricts which icons can appear in the system tray. Previously it was a whitelist, but now the mechanism appears to have changed. On recent versions (14.x and 16.x), you can follow these instructions.

It would be great if someone would submit a pull request that integrates with Unity's dock, but as someone who doesn't use Unity (and lacks the time to work on this right now) I won't be able to do it anytime soon.
