I believe a RPi model 4 and (possibly) player software 4.x is required for 4K resolution. I am running a few Pis (model 4, 8GB RAM) on the latest 4.x version and they are displaying static 4K content without issue.
"piSignage supports upto 4K resolution based on TV resolution with Raspberry Pi 4.
Current standalone video players commonly available for Raspberry Pi only support H.264 hardware decoding which is limited to 1080p video in pi GPU.
Only H.265 (HEVC) videos can be hardware decoded upto 4K resolutions in Pi GPU and currently is not supported by the standalone players available or piSignage uses.
Till we identify a suitable standalone player only videos upto 1080p are supported by piSignage in Pi 4 as well although they are scaled to 4K."
This is a very useful piece of software, however 4k content support is missing.
