We do the assimilation because someone has to. However, we're not experts in any of the gas cycles, observation networks etc. (really). To fix this, you really need a collaboration between a team like us (and maybe also ESM teams), which has to deal with all of these gases in our own model, a group that just produces clean data (currently us, but doesn't have to be) and experts in each of the cycles.
Funding this would obviously be an issue, because it's an awkward combination of science and operational work that doesn't have clear funders right now.
