Caramelised Onions

Ingredients (Approx ratios for 1 onion)

  • 1 Onion
  • 1 tsp Extra virgin olive oil
    • Butter (optional)
  • Salt
  • ~1/4 tsp Sugar
  • Balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Slice onions in thin 'wedges'
  2. Heat oil and butter on medium high heat in large pan
  3. Add onions and stir to coat with oil and spread out; reduce heat to medium - medium-low
  4. Cook for 30-60min - stir occasionally (every few minutes) until a rich brown colour
    1. After 10min, sprinkle with salt and sugar
    2. If it starts to dry out, add some water
    3. If it starts to burn, add some oil
    4. Lower temperature after 20-30min
  5. Add some balsamic vinegar to deglaze pan and add more flavour
