Even though I'm quite content with the offerings of more established channels like Chillhop Music (my personal favorite) I am always on the lookout for new tunes. "content_html": "\n
\n I like keyboards. Like... a lot. So whenever I come across a damaged vintage keyboard I check out if it is:\n
\n\n
\n A. Salvageable
and
B. Interesting enough for me to work on\n
\n\n
\n So when I happened to come across a heavily abused BTC 5300C I quickly did my routine checks and determined that the keyboard fits my two criteria and began working on restoring it.\n
\n\n
\n When I discovered the keyboard at an old storage facility it was covered in oil! 😱 It reeked too (yuck 🤢). However, it didn't look like it was damaged beyond the point of being salvageable and after a quick lookup I discovered the keyboard uses cherry stems, so if the restoration didn't work out I could always just harvest the keycaps. Neat :D\n
\n\n
\n Key Mechanism and feeling \n
\n\n
\n ℹ️ There are those who claim that BTC dome with slider keyboards provide a typing experience very close to TOPRE keyboards. Having never typed on a TOPRE keyboard I am unable to verify this claim. If you are not able to shell out for a TOPRE keyboard, a BTC keyboard may be worth looking into as a cheaper alternative.\n
\n\n
\n The BTC 5300C uses a dome with slider mechanism that provides an interesting typing feel. The mechanism itself looks like there is a miniature table lodged over a nipple. Each dome is a separate conductor, so it's not built like the standard rubber dome sheets you see these days.\n
\n\n
\n \n
Rubber sheet my ass! Note the mini table near the enter key.
\n
\n\n
\n When I did my initial typing tests I was wearing gloves because the keyboard was still covered in oil. The feeling was... interesting. It felt like typing on a heavier hybrid switch which is why I was initially fooled into thinking the keyboard was mechanical. Well, that and the Cherry MX stems...\n
\n

After refurbishing the keyboard I did another typing test and recorded an accompanying video. The typing experience feels quite rigid. The keyboard feels a bit too heavy for my tastes but it I wouldn't call it bad either.

\n\n
\n I wouldn't recommend trashing the board and just harvesting the keys as many redditors over on the mechanical keyboard Reddit suggest. This keyboard is certainly a step up from a standard rubber sheet keyboard.\n
\n\n
\n The restoration process \n
\n\n
\n Disassembly\n
\n\n
\n Every restoration process is roughly the same: gently disassemble to board, keep track of all the parts and give it a good scrub 🧼 Sounds easy enough, right? Well, for most modern keyboards this would no longer be the case, but that's why I love vintage tech; not only are all the screws much bigger than those we see nowadays, but there is also a clear absence of proprietary components. Everything is just sorta... out there in the open.\n
\n\n
\n The two pictures below sum up the process nicely, basically you unscrew the mounting screws located at the bottom of the keyboard and then detach the metal base, after which you get unrestricted access all the innards of the keyboard.\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n \n \n \n \n

\n \n \n \n \n
\n
\n
\n\n
\n Cleaning\n
\n\n
\n Normally I would just use denture cleaning tablets on keyboards as severely yellowed as this one, but seeing as how my fallback plan was to just take the keycaps and run I did not want to risk damaging the keycaps, so instead I opted for multiple soaking sessions in lukewarm water with a tiny amount added. \n
\n\n
\n I did three soaking sessions in total and ever so gently rubbed off all the nasty. The emphasis lies on gently here, because manhandling the keycaps would have been a surefire way to destroy the lettering on the keycaps. \n
\n\n
\n \n
A bowl of keycaps anyone 🧐
\n
\n\n
\n I'm honestly surprised by how good these looked after cleaning, considering the amount of gunk and oil that was on them. I chose the lowest temperature setting so the plastic would not warp due to the heat (dishwashers can get very hot!).\n
\n\n
\n After the bottom and top half of the keyboard finished their little dishwasher adventure I let everything dry and the proceeded to put the keyboard together again, which was the same process as the disassembly process, only, you know... reversed.\n
\n\n
\n \n
Behold the keyboard in all its clean glory!
\n
\n\n
\n Results and typing demonstration\n
\n\n
\n Whilst I wasn't able to completely soak off all the muck (who knows how long the keyboard has been submerged in all that oil and grime!), I was definitely able to get rid of the smell and get the keyboard looking decent. I certainly wouldn't mind typing on it! Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a fully working keyboard out of it. As it turned out, the oil did a number on the circuitry which resulted in several dead keys which is a total bummer! As a thank you gift for some services rendered I received a QNAP TS-219P+ that I had big plans for. I have 2 external drives, one for media and one for incremental backups so sticking them into the NAS would surely ease my daily routines.
\n
Dismanteling the drives wasn’t all that challenging and before no time the first disk was installed in the NAS. I decided to start with just one disk (the media one), because it didn’t hold any important data anyway and I was unsure if the NAS needed to format the drives in order to use them.
\n
I ran the first use utility and the set-up was pretty straight forward. Since I don’t really like JBOD I opted to let the NAS skip RAID and just view each tray as a single disk. In retrospect this was a bad move :(
\n
The problem
\n
Once I had the NAS set up and was done moving all my data to the NAS I dismanteled the remaining drive and popped it in the NAS. I tried hot plugging it to see if the NAS would go for it and surely it did. Well… sort of…
\n
Whatever I tried, the NAS would refuse to initialize the drive! It would just keep telling me:
\n
\n

[Singe Disk Volume: Drive 2] Formatting failed.

\n

[Singe Disk Volume: Drive 2] Formatting failed(Cannot unmount disk).

\n
\n
None of QNAP’s own documentation seemed to work as well as standard LINUX stuff. I later learned that QNAP operates on a slightly modded version of BUSYBOX
\n
The fix
\n
The fix was relatively simple, but I had to use steps from various other fixes (maily from people having problems with JBOD).
\n
\n
Connect to the NAS with SSH (NOTE: you can only SSH into the NAS with the admin account - admin / password)
\n
Stop all the running services with the following command
/etc/init.d/services.sh stop

\n
Format the drive with ONE, and ONLY ONE partition using fdisk. You should be presented with the error 16 when you reach the final step and attempt to write the changes
\n
POWER DOWN the NAS. Do not reboot instead. I you reboot the disk will remain unitialized.
\n
After powering back up, log into the web interface and navigate to storage manager. The second disk should now say that it is not yet mounted. DO NOT attempt to mount the disk from SSH as this will just show errors and will force you to power down again.
\n
FORMAT the drive from the webinterface. It will automatically mount everything as it sees fit and you should end up with a mounted usable second drive.
\n
\n
I hope this will help some of you that are facing the same annoying issue I was facing. you’ve been a worthy foe linux. I will see you again soon for our next battle.
\n",

",
