A Gentle Introduction to Running Your Own Server

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

My intended audience are developers who are either unfamiliar with or don't know where to start on learning how to set up their own servers.

+ +

The current draft is in two parts:
+* Briefly explain the benefits of a developer dabbling in ops (career potential, easier to communicate with ops with common ground, exposure to new ideas)
+* Demo using Vagrant/Chef/Berkshelf and open-source Chef cookbooks to get started building a server locally and deploying it to Digital Ocean.

+ +

Starting with an empty directory, set up Vagrant and Berkshelf to set up a VM, iterate on it until Nginx is serving something and I can poke around the server. Then, simply recreate that server on Digital Ocean reusing all the work of setting it up locally. Time allowing, this can expand to learning a bit about Nginx and setting up DNS.

+ +

This won't be comprehensive training. My goal is to demonstrate how easy it is to get started managing your own inexpensive server. I want to encourage experimentation rather than focus on 'here's the right way to set up a server'. From there the world's your oyster.

Are We Doing DevOps Right?

+ +

Abstract

+ +

How do we know if we're doing DevOps right? Is there a checklist of tools we should deploy, meetings we should schedule, org charts we should implement? DevOps first and foremost involves cultural transformation. But what does that really mean? How do we know if we have a healthy DevOps culture? How does cultural transformation relate to and guide tools and practices? Ultimately, DevOps is about empathy between Dev, QA, and Ops, between IT and the rest of the business, and between the business and its customers. This session will discuss empathy as the essence of DevOps. It will talk about what that means and how we can put it into practice as IT professionals.

Automating OpenStack In The Microsoft World

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

OpenStack cloud computing is here to stay, and adoption is growing. There are plenty of tools, articles and presentations about automating OpenStack from the perspective of a Linux user, but what about shops that use Microsoft Windows?

+ +

The OpenStack.NET SDK, a PowerShell client, even Chef and Ansible are (or will soon be) available as tools to help Windows System Engineers and Developers in their quest for automation. Native commands and tools will be presented, examples will be shown and demonstrated, and Windows users will leave with a knowledge of how to automate OpenStack in this packed, 30-minute presentation.

Being an Agent of Change - a One-Year Retrospective

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Take one DevOps Enthusiast, add him to an established company to help drive culture shift, and see what happens in a year.

+ +

Originally hired as "Sr. Ops. Engineer" to a break-out team, but the executives intend "a larger role" in shifting the culture and driving adoption of a DevOps mindset and building a Continuous Delivery Pipeline. Oh, and help migrate from Java-on-Windows to Linux.

+ +

This will be a story (as yet incomplete), and will include some points of what has worked, missteps, (probably) cursing, and a lot of love for a lot of new friends.

Clash

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

As the world of digital analytics evolves, the relationship between IT, developers and analytics has merged--often resulting in clashing ideas, in-depth discussions of web structure and forced collaboration.

+ +

Within the brief ignite, I'll be applying the idea of how DevOp/IT web structure understandings and digital analytics 'Clash'--for the better. The ignite will highlight a few web measurement cases (examples) to provide support and relate-ability to the talk.

Configuration Management 101

+ +

Description: +Far too often, the term 'devops' is confused with configuration management and the tooling surrounding it. At the other end of the spectrum are pure culture topics and trust falls. Somewhere in the middle lies the truth.

+ +

Tools are cultural artifacts. As such, common themes run through modern CM tooling. This talk explores the past, present, and future of configuration management strategies in a tool agnostic fashion. It covers the basics of repeatability, distributed systems thinking, and orchestration.

Conway's Law: The Skeleton Of Devops

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Devops is about communication. In order to make better software, we seek out diverse viewpoints, use a common vocabulary, and encourage transparency.

+ +

But despite all this focus on communication, we don't have much of a framework to guide our decisions.

+ +

"Should we do continuous integration?"

+ +

"Why not? People seem to like that."

+ +

"What about ChatOps?"

+ +

"Sure, yeah; it works for GitHub."

+ +

Well, there's a half-forgotten rule -- first stated 46 years ago -- that can guide us through these decisions. It's called Conway's Law:

+ +

Organizations which design systems ... are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations.

+ +

I'll show how Conway's Law is derived, how it's been empirically tested, and how it informs so much of what we do in devops. I want my audience to walk away with a new tool for spreading devops, shaping cross-team communication, and moving forward with confidence.

Culture is a By-product of Individuals

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Everyone is hiring. Interviewing is hard. Hiring is harder. With all of these dynamics being an employer or an employee can be difficult. Our field can be the most difficult, stressful and draining at times. Stressful? Ever patch a production database and it fails to come back...ever deploy the businesses most important feature ever (today) and it doesn't work because it's 2014 and the internet hasn't figured out how to have production data usable for development.

+ +

One of the most difficult aspects to a job is having an evolving culture that employers and employees can love together. This talk will dive into theories on hiring, interviewing and supporting a culture that employees can enjoy and forget about the stressful nature.

+ +

It all starts with you; every employee of a company has responsibility over the culture and every employeer has responsibility for supporting that culture.

Delightful Autoscaling with Chef and AWS

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

No single tool does a good job provisioning a complete stack -- from VM container or bare metal, to fully-provisioned server, deployed applications, and multi-node topology.

+ +

AWS and Chef are two tools that we often use, and together they can cover the complete stack:

+ +
    +
  • AWS handles the infrastructure, up to a running instance.
  • +
  • Chef provisions, configures, and deploys on top of the base instance.
  • +
  • We use both tools in concert to manage topologies of multiple nodes.
  • +
+ + +

Two common patterns for integrating AWS and Chef are 1) baking Chef into AMIs, and 2) bootstrapping it through CloudFormation and user-data. But both approaches have drawbacks, especially when it comes to autoscaling.
+Enter Linecook.

+ +

Linecook is a Chef "provisioner" we've created, specifically with autoscaling in mind. It consumes AWS autoscale notifications to rapidly bootstrap newly-created nodes with Chef, and delete terminated ones from Chef Server.

+ +

In our presentation, we propose to:

+ +
    +
  • Talk about the basic problem (why no single tool covers the entire stack)
  • +
  • Explain the limitations of the common patterns for integrating Chef and AWS
  • +
  • Demonstrate and discuss the Linecook approach
  • +
  • Discuss going beyond AWS: support for other clouds
  • +
+ + +

DevOps Tales: A Journey through Swamps of Sadness

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

This talk is a corollary around DevOps that includes analogical references to movies like 'The NeverEnding Story', ' Raiders of the Lost Ark', and 'Empire Strikes Back'. This presentation roots back to days long ago, when things were done that are similar to current DevOps philosophies, challenges that non-'DevOps' engineers/sysadms/technologists can expect (and those are all ok!), and ideas to ponder from Yoda.

Devops Is Dead (Long Live Devops)

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

The idea of devops has come a long way in the few years since its creation. While it started as a movement so small that only a few people had even heard of it, it has grown into something that can be found nearly everywhere in the tech industry, from any piece of software that involves configuration or automation to huge conferences and expos packed with more commercial vendor pitches than actual content. Some people have seen this and declared that devops has jumped the shark, that the term has been used for so many things that it no longer has any meaning.

+ +

So where do we go from here? More than just teaching sysadmins how to write code or giving developers root access, devops was originally a movement that aimed to reduce friction between development and operations teams. By applying these principles and the lessons that have been learned to other organizational pain points, we can give new meaning to the term and use that to improve both our companies and our community.

Do you know when your application stop working, run slow or just acting weird? (Alternative name when your app acts weird in the middle of the night does it wake you up?)

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

As more and more applications are moving to the cloud, applications and applications support becomes complex while the amount of information developers and operations have gone down due to security concerns. At the same time companies want to provide improved SLA and customer experience and expect their support and developers teams to be proactive, which is very hard without insight to their application health and behaviour. DevOps teams and management are struggling to better understand their app's health and if it is working, slow or not behaving as designed. In this session the speaker will share best-practice methods of application health and performance monitoring and how to use this data along with logs aggregation and error aggregation to expedite issues resolution and prevention of recurrent issues

Eating our own dog food---DevOps at Compuware

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

If you glance over the schedules of DevOps tracks at conferences, you get the impression that the topic is mostly focused on running large-scale web sites-but is that the truth? While we as a software company provide a number of products, this session is not about what we offer-it's about how we managed to adopt a DevOps mentality across our development, testing and operations teams. We talk about the process of getting there, the challenges we encountered along the way, and how we measure success.

Fallible humans: dealing with failure in the absence of scapegoats

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Functional siloing - "dev", "ops", etc. - make it easier to pass the buck and blame others when things go wrong. In an environment where dev, ops, and other business functions co-operate and work together, it's not so easy to fall back on traditional scapegoats. DevOps approaches encourage us to move away from the harmful (and counterproductive) apportioning of blame for failure, but it takes effort and commitment from all involved.

+ +

I'll discuss the philosophy and motivations of "blamelessness", along with ways to understand the vital role humans play in making complex socio-technical systems safe, even when things go awry, along with advice on how to promote and foster a blameless culture in your workplace, and techniques for analyzing and learning from failures without resorting to finger-pointing and scapegoating.

First you build the team, then they build the things.

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

At the core of every output is a team who must work together, trust each other, and overcome obstacles to build a thing. Since we rarely get to hand pick our teams, this talk will provide five (not-so-easy) tips to build an environment in which they thrive.

From OMGWTFBBQ to Delightful with this one weird trick

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Getting into configuration management can be very daunting especially for people who currently run artisinal hand crafted servers. This talk will cover starting out with Chef from very basic use cases to building out a full CI pipeline with code reviews, automated testing, and deployments.

+ +

At the end of this talk new chef users, and intermediate users will be armed with enough knowledge to go back to their jobs and start implmenting chef, or upping their chef game to include unit tests, code review, and other more advanced uses.

Handmade security at Etsy

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

The landscape of security is very different to when we were younger. What possible directions is it heading in, and have we been looking at it wrong all this time?

+ +

Devops culture has brought a number of improvements to the way engineering and operations interact with each other and it's time security comes along for the party too! This talk will discuss what we, at Etsy, have done to make people stop thinking of security as a four-letter word.

LEGOOps

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

This "LEGOOps" ignite talk is a corollary to DevOps, including culture, tools, community. The presentation goes through why implementing automation on core services, establishing patterns, and leveraging 'service management' are all good ideas when looking to implement DevOps within an existing company - especially an environment that includes legacy infra solutions and is competing with newer methods to deliver IT assets.

Sascha Bates' opening keynote will dive into the questions of how to level up your DevOps practice. She'll discuss how to go from the zeal of a convert to the calm competence of an accomplished practitioner, touching on the introspection necessary to realize that DevOps is neither a tool to adjust everyone else to one's own standards nor a mechanism to correct the interactions of others.

Maintaining lower environments automagically?

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Maintaining lower development environments can become an unbearable headache. Changes to an application, service or API are seldom completely testable, leaving us to discover broken code when it's too late. This lack of visibility into application dependencies severely limits early code validation, which has a direct impact on delivery cycles. While traditional methods of Change Management, Test Data Management and Test Scheduling have failed, there's now an opportunity to finally deliver on the vision of always available, always configured and always verifiable.

+ +

In his talk, (name), Senior Director of Product Management at CA Technologies, to discuss how the "software defined enterprise" through proper virtual services and API management now provides the building blocks to realize automated change validation.

Optimize Your Incident Response Workflow

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

When downtime costs thousands to millions a minute, a tight incident response workflow is critical. Who needs to be involved in high-severity events? How do you minimize your time to respond, diagnose, collaborate on, and fix problems? How do you organize your postmortems to help prevent future problems? In this workshop, we'll share some best practices from pagerduty customers, as well as invite attendees to share their own.

+ +

Specifics:

+ +

Best practices for creating your escalation policies and looping in the right responders. What experience levels and skillsets do you need at each level of your escalation chain.

+ +

Using chat to maintain a central incident timeline and share rich data. Whether Hipchat, Slack, Hangouts, or another product, how do you keep the signal:noise high and use chat to drive faster resolutions?

+ +

Creating a protocol to loop in support, sales, and other stakeholders when incidents are open for a long time and/or severity grows.

+ +

Holding postmortems to review the incident, aggregate information, and create a plan to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Product Development for DevOps

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Product and customer development for the operations and engineering crowd is a different animal than in the consumer or enterprise space. While there is lots of overlap, such as the importance of product-market fit and focusing your product vision, the trends of automation, collaboration, and integrated workflows create some unique opportunities and pitfalls for software companies operating in the devops space.

+ +

Specifics:

+ +

When creating user personas, take their technical ability into account. Can your users code? Are they easily frustrated, or are they used to complex documentation?

+ +

If you're selling to devops companies, assume you'll be part of an automated workflow. API coverage is key, and this includes good API documentation.
+ Track and share the extensions, libraries, workarounds, and other add-ons that your users create. Use those as part of the product discovery process.

Promising Digital Service Quality

+ +

Description:

+ +

Promise Theory is a formal model for describing complex distributed systems. It can also be used to describe socio-technical systems such as DevOps or even entire digital service organizations. This session will demonstrate Promise Theory's ability to improve service quality by helping us increase empathy and better understand certainty and uncertainty in the systems we manage.

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Promise Theory is a powerful formal model conceived by Mark Burgess to describe the relationships that drive complex distributed systems. It forms the conceptual basis for CFEngine; it can also, though, be used to describe socio-technical systems such as DevOps or even entire digital service organizations. Promise Theory offers a language for thinking about service relationships within and between systems, people, and organizations. This language can help us improve service quality by increasing empathy between organizations and people, and by better understanding the relationships between continuity and discontinuity in the systems we manage.

+ +

This session will introduce Promise Theory as a methodology that can help us deliver continuous service quality in environments characterized by complexity, uncertainty, and change. The session will start with a brief introduction to the topic. The introduction will focus on explaining what Promise Theory is and how it works, without delving into the underlying mathematical formalisms. The session will then present specific DevOps and digital service scenarios. It will explain how these scenarios can benefit from Promise Theory, and provide concrete examples that illustrate the power of Promise Theory in action.

Rub Some Ops On It

+ +

Description +Leveling up your development skills with some lessons learned from operations.

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Building software is hard. Building maintainable quality software is incredibly hard. You know what else is hard? Running software. Operations has learned quite a bit from the development side of the house, a solid Ops person understands the basic principles of software development. But the reverse should also be true for developers. Coming from the perspective of someone who's done both, operations gives you an interesting view on how to run and ship software. Operations forces you to become an expert in recovering from failure. How to debug a problem when the only data you have are symptoms of that problem. It's a constant loop of continuous improvements to prevent the same problem from happening again. It's risk assessment, if something is a high risk how can you reduce that risk and still accomplish the desired goal? Operations requires understanding the impact of a change to your system, it could be the difference in shipping the nastiest hidden regression your software has ever seen versus shipping the new hotness feature that becomes it's number one selling point. But the most important thing developers can learn from operations is that everyone has the same goal, to ship and run maintainable quality software for your customers.

Take More Vacations

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Vacation time is often in short supply. Even at companies like Netflix with unlimited vacation days, employees often don't take very much time off. I'll argue that this is counterproductive, and that allowing (and taking) proper vacations benefits not only employees but their employers too.

The life in a particle accelerator or how to have agile development without being sucked to constant production support

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Agile development increases the velocity at which new features are created and released and bugs are fixed. But as more things change and change faster, more bugs get created in the process. This has resulted in a need for improved monitoring and have better insight to the application behaviour. IT, operations and developers need to have better production environment troubleshooting tools that will allow them to reproduce and fix production application problems quickly. In this session the speaker will discuss how agile development can be combined with improved monitoring and to allow for quicker detection and resolution of app issues. He will also share best-practice and tips for proactive application monitoring and the efficient use of logs and errors in combination of application performance monitoring.

Towards a Functional Infrastructure

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

This presentation will examine how functional programming concepts like referential transparency can be applied to problems like package management in the domain of operations and release engineering. NixOS and Guix are two GNU/Linux distributions applying functional programming concepts to package management and build systems to create systems that are better defined, more efficient, and more flexible. Package maintainers for Debian and developers for Tor have started research into reproducible, deterministic builds to enhance security. Regulated industries often use traceability matrices to map requirements onto the code and artifacts produced. We will look at how efforts like these, in addition to the seemingly mundane version number, relate to concepts at the heart of functional programming and how we might mine these ideas for inspiration to improve the way we operate.

Transforming DevOps with Docker

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

A number of inefficiencies exist in the software development workflow at most companies. A major contributor is inconsistencies in different environments as code moves from a developer's machine to build, staging, and production environments. You hear frequent complaints like - “ But it works on my machine”.

+ +

We moved to a Docker based process a few months ago, where Docker containers are integrated into the development workflow right from the time code is written on a developer’s machine to the time it is deployed into production. As a result, we can avoid environment conflicts, save on ops effort and costs, and ship features faster with better quality.

+ +

We will present our tips and tricks on how to containerize your DevOps workflow and ship features painlessly and often.

Was the band Tool a Prophet of DevOps Culture?

+ +

Abstract:

+ +

Given the premise of a component of legal theory in the United States, I will take you on a whirlwind tour that demonstrates how Tool may have been a Prophet of DevOps culture, both describing the problem that corporate culture creates, and like any good prophesy, the solution to avoiding doom. (No animal sacrifices required.)
