<p>
I am an Associate Professor in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech (also affiliated with the Machine Learning Center). I do research on natural language processing. My research group investigates questions regarding robust models that work across many domains and languages, while requiring <a href='https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.14592'>fewer</a> <a href='https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.03690.pdf'>labels</a>, and making <a href='https://arxiv.org/pdf/2109.04711.pdf'>efficient</a> use of computational <a href='https://arxiv.org/pdf/2305.01645.pdf'>resources</a>. I am also interested in <a href='https://aclanthology.org/D11-1054/'>data-driven</a> <a href='https://www.aclweb.org/anthology/D16-1127/'>dialogue</a> <a href='https://www.aclweb.org/anthology/D17-1230'>agents</a> that <a href='https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.04952'>safely</a> and naturally converse on any <a href='https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.17280'>topic</a>.
</p>
<!--
<p>
Before joining Georgia Tech, I received my Ph.D. from the University of Washington, did a postdoc in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon, and was an Assistant/Associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at Ohio State.
</p>

<!--
<p>
Here is a <a href="http://ec2-54-170-89-29.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com:8000/"'>demo</a> of one of my research projects, that automatically extracts a calendar of popular events in the near future from Twitter.
</p>
-->
I am recruiting Ph.D. students this year. I advise students in both our <a href='https://ml.gatech.edu/phd'>ML</a> and <a href='https://www.cc.gatech.edu/degree-programs/phd-computer-science'>CS</a> Ph.D. programs. For current Georgia Tech students interested in research: please email me a copy of your resume, transcript, and a proposal of what you would like to work on together with me.

Much of humanity's collective knowledge is encoded in text.
Broadly I am interested in getting computers to better <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_language_understanding">understand natural language</a>, and new applications this will enable.
I enjoy working with large quantities of text which is not restricted to a narrow domain, such as that found on the <b>Web</b> or in <b>Social Media</b>.
Specifically my work focuses on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_extraction">Information Extraction</a>, <a href="http://www.siglex.org/">Computational Lexical Semantics</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_variable">Latent Variable Models</a>, <a href="http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/events/lsm2011/">Language Processing in Social Media</a> and <a href="http://iuiconf.org/">Intelligent Interfaces</a>.
