The default sans-serif font has ambiguous letterforms like I l I l, which is not very conducive to question reading needs.

Is anything other than serif workable on all systems? When I checked Times New Roman doesn't exist in Ubuntu by default.

Well I don't know the situation on Ubuntu specifically, but the beauty of font stacks is that you can specify serif as a fallback after Times, Times New Roman.
