What problem does this address?

There is a grey border around the Page Template to give a hint that one is in template mode. Containing a <- Back text link to return to the page.

The following is an example where I am also taking James @jameskoster suggestion from this PR: #32037 and adding it here.

Page-template-grey-border

The top area titles.
About (page is a link that brings the user back to the About page.)
WordCamp Outreach (has a drop down to where one can see information about the template as well as delete it.)

What is your proposed solution?

Page-template-no-grey-borders

Remove the grey border, and instead use the Page title in the top to return to the page. One would be able to use the full screen for creating the layout.

Hints to signal that one is in a different kind of screen:
Top bar: Two titles
Sidebar Settings: Tab says Template instead of page.

Considering the Inspector can be closed, I'm not convinced that the top bar contents alone are adequate in communicating the context shift here.

It may not be perfect, but the gray frame does quickly and clearly indicate the significance of the transition from post editing to template editing. Removing it puts us back at square one. Did you have any ideas of things we could potentially replace it with instead?

Hey James

Did you have any ideas of things we could potentially replace it with instead?

Thank you for asking!
I wanted to add this issue, so we can leave it open to see what kinds of ideas show up. (I am blank for the moment.)
I am totally open to being mistaken. We will see what kinds of feedback that shows up.

The other option we explored in #27849 was an inverted UI color scheme:

But this is a lot of work, and raises questions around how future features like dark mode would be interpreted.

This is an old concept, but I'm sharing since it handily demonstrates how the frame can enable us to tie other views together seamlessly. For example zooming out to an "exploded" view where you can easily re-order entire sections of the document and quickly swap patterns etc. Or zooming all the way out of the template editor to the template mosaic view, where you get a holistic view of the entire theme, and direct access to edit other templates, global styles, etc.
