Topic Description

This lesson plan digs deeper into style.css; it explores why this file was once so important in classic themes, but what its primary function is in block themes.

This lesson should distinguish between what is the bare minimum needed in a style.css theme, and also what additional information can be included, and why. It should invite learners to consider their own use-case, and ask them to consider if they eventually want to distribute their custom theme or not. They do not need to make a decision now, but some "best practices" of what to include if they might want to distribute their theme would be an excellent addition to include!

Objectives

After completing this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Create a style.css theme
  • Write the necessary parts of a new block theme's style.css
  • Evaluate their own theme's needs and include any additional information in the style.css file
