When trying to play the visual novel Fate/stay night (the old Realta Nua version, not the recently released Steam remaster), there is a low but really noticeable static sound that also comes through the speakers. I've ruled out the possibility of this being an issue with the program itself since on my Windows PC it runs without any sort of static, and it also runs without any sort of static on CrossOver.
I've seen a few similar bugs reported around here, and I've tried most of the fixes that I could find, without any success. I've tried:
As suggested in [Bug]: Distorted sound in Source games #445, I've tried to change the output device format in Audio MIDI Setup, but none of the other options helps.
-Based on an afternoon of scouring the internet, I've also installed xact, dmusic, I've tried to change the default of the bottle to Windows XP. I've also installed various dependencies mentioned in wine-related posts for Linux, like d3dx9_36, dotnet40, ffdshow, quartz, and vcrun6
I've seen other mentions of this being an issue with the older version of Wine that Whisky is using, which would also explain why it's working on Crossover, but I'm not sure if that is the case. I'm out of ideas on how to make this work regardless. It might indeed be something related to the fact that this is an older game, even if it's patched - because I'm not having any issues with the sound in any of the other visual novels that I've been trying to play.
Steps to reproduce
Fresh install of Whisky on macOS Sonoma via the .dmg file provided on the website
Set up a new bottle of either the default Windows 10 or Windows 11
use Winetricks to install dsound
Move the files necessary to install and to patch Fate stay/night realta nua into the C Drive
click on run and successfully run the patch installer
Pin the Fate exe
Run the Fate exe
Expected behaviour
The expected behaviour would have been for the game to run and for there to be no issues with the sound. I do not remember there being any issues with the sound back in the day on PlayonMac but it's admittedly been a while.
