Competency questions for glacial ontologies

In this issue, we would brainstorm competency questions to test our various ontologies and models against. These will help keep us on point and focused....

Our domain and vocabulary people may be best able to start this, but here are some thoughts from our prior writings:

• what is the total volume of ice in Glacier/Ice Sheet/Ice Cap/ X in period X? What is the average over Periods M-Z?

• How much snow/mass has accumulated via deposition/direct snow fall/avalanches in period X?

• How much snow/mass has been lost through ablation melting/sublimation/erosion/weathering/meltwater flow /and calving in period X? How does this differ from Period Y?

• What are the constituents of glacier X in period Y? How do they differ from Period Y-1?

• Where is Glacier/Alpine Glacier/Ice Cap/Ice Sheet...located?

• How many Bergschrunds/Glacier lakes/Hosted Features did Glacier X have in Period Y? Where were they located?

• Where was the Equilibrium line/Firn Line located on Glacier X have in Period Y?

• How far did the Equilibrium line/Firn Line of Glacier X move from Period Y to Period Z?

• What proportion of Glacier X's mass/volume was made of Firn/névé in Period Y?

• Did Glacier X have an Ice dam in Period Y? If so where was it located?

• Where was the Outwash Plain/Terminus for Glacier X in Period Y? How does it differ from Period Y?
