This repository contains the code and processed data for a 2022 ecological study on the relationship between historical asbestos consumption and mesothelioma deaths.

This study was published as: Rath EM, Yuen ML, Odgerel CO, Lin RT, Soeberg M, Nowak AK, Takahashi K. The Ecological Association between Asbestos Consumption and Asbestos-Related Diseases 15 Years Later. Environ Health Perspect. 2022 May;130(5):57703. doi: 10.1289/EHP11148. Epub 2022 May 27. PMID: 35622389; PMCID: PMC9138507.

This study is an update of the following ecological study: Lin RT, Takahashi K, Karjalainen A, Hoshuyama T, Wilson D, Kameda T, Chan CC, Wen CP, Furuya S, Higashi T, Chien LC, Ohtaki M. Ecological association between asbestos-related diseases and historical asbestos consumption: an international analysis. Lancet. 2007 Mar 10;369(9564):844-849. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(07)60412-7. PMID: 17350453.

Deaths data are taken from World Health Organisation (WHO), for C45 all mesothelioma, C450 pleural mesothelioma, C451 peritoneal mesothelioma, and J61 asbestosis, for the years 2010-2014. Asbestos consumption data are taken from United States Geological Survey (USGS) for 1970-1980 and 1960-1970.
