How about oceaniR, polynesiR or melanesiR a package similar to strayr, but for the Pacific Islands would include code for cleaning names, a palette, shapefile functions etc?

This is a very nice idea, Sam. It might also play well in sync with #12
SDMX is a widely adopted data model for official statistics (and beyond) data.
For the Pacific, we at the Pacific Community | Communatue du Pacifique disseminate a treasure trove of data through our SPC .Stat instance. The data is available through a well documented Rest(ish) API, and a Data Explorer web interfaced.
However, some things are less easy that one would like (i.e., collecting all the data for a specific country or set of countries) and package like {strayR} is something we would benefit a lot from.
