Currently not possible without matrix-org/matrix-spec-proposals#1888 / only very hackingly possible, would highly prefer to wait for proper support

I believe that @tulir is bridging read receipts back to Whatsapp, maybe with the hack?

There already seems to be support for the setmatrixtoken (presumably offered by the bridge code), so "hack" is already part way there.

It would still be one sync loop per user using in, as opposed to only a single sync loop. So, no hack stuff going on currently.

Would also love to see 'read' message support for Slack. Currently, whenever I login to the Slack App I'm notified about dozens of unread messages, this can be alleviated somewhat by muting all channels, but it would be great to just be able to mark messages read once I've read them on the Matrix side.
