Intransparent switch to LimeWire #651
Comments
LimeWire is spreading like a plague. I hope it doesn't get to PairDrop. |
True, this is dead toast. Time to clone for self host. Yet another dead project victim to corpo greed and AI bloat crap. |
Snapdrop isn't even usable anymore, it's just a redirect to limewire. RIP |
Very sad! As the maintainer of the Snapdrop Android app, I plan to move existing users to PairDrop, as I don’t want to promote a suspicious company like Limewire. (see fm-sys/snapdrop-android#406) |
Thank you for this! I opened up Snapdrop today and was confused thinking I mistyped the URL and got to a phishing/scam site. I don't understand how Snapdrop got bought out if it was open source? Did the original creator of Snapdrop just sell his soul? |
I was wondering about what the fuck happened, what the fuck is this shit. |
The promised update is already rolling out! 📢 The latest version of the Android app removes Snapdrop.net support and switches fully to PairDrop to ensure a secure and private experience. It may take some days though, until the update is visible for everyone in the store. I strongly recommend not using Snapdrop anymore, as files now seem to be uploaded to the cloud instead of staying on the local network. |
Bravo. Thank you for making this change and for your work+time. |
There've been red flags like a year ago or so, when the site itself was down for some amount of time. Then there was reliability issues for me. Thank god for alternatives |
How incredibly sad this is.. Let's see what kind of pain it is to deploy it to my own domain |
R.I.P SnapDrop (2015-2025) |
why can't we have nice things. |
I'm going to try Tailscale/Taildrop or perhaps go back to Resilio Sync. |
Oh for fucks sake, just tried using it and got hit with that lime wire piece of shit :/ Do you know any other alternatives of in-browser local network share apps like old SnapDrop? |
Nice job sellouts. Way to kill a piece of FOSS 🙌 |
You’re all complaining for no reason. The project’s source code hasn’t been modified and still open source, and anyone can clone it and host it on their own domain. The site/domain isn’t open-source, and @RobinLinus reserves the right to utilize or host anything as they wish/can afford. I stumbled upon this awesome project a few months ago, and it has made my life much easier when it comes to sharing clipboard contents locally. Thank you to all contributors for making this project possible. It’s very unfortunate that the site no longer mirrors the original vision of the project, but I’m grateful for when it used to just work. |
I previously had a self-hosted instance in Azure as a plan B during the outages last year, but I've now reactivated it after seeing this mess! Sounds like PairDrop may be the future though. |
My instance is still up on https://snapdrop.mohammadag.com I can't promise it'll be up forever, but as long as I keep that server it'll probably stay up. |
I've been using SnapDrop regularly because it sends files through my local network only – perfect for sharing between devices at home.
Now it suddenly uses LimeWire and the files get uploaded to some cloud. Has this project been compromised? If SnapDrop has actually been "acquired" by Limewire as the README states, shouldn't users at the very least get warned about their files being uploaded and not staying within their local network?
