Introduction to Qualitative Research & Practice

This is a seminar for Master's students in SNU-HCIL.

Being HCI researchers, we often encounter research topics that involve qualitative research methods. However, compared to quantitative analysis, how to conduct qualitative research is not well known to students. This seminar aims to help students learn it by performing 2-month-long group projects. The projects will include:

  • Formal interview and user study (e.g., building questionaire, how to record it)
  • Qualitative analysis (e.g., coding, thematic analysis)
  • How to report the result in academic manners

Syllabus

As a participant, you are required to do the following during this seminar:

  1. (individual) 8-minute-long presentation that introduces core concepts in one chapter of the textbook
  2. (group) A toy research project from ideation to publication
  3. (group) 1-hour-long lecture regarding one chapter of the textbook

Week 1: Orientation (1/3 -> 1/6)

  • Self-Introduction Time (including favorite topics in qualitative research field)
  • Kiroong's Keynote
    • Motivation and overview of the seminar
    • Review Youngho Kim's 2 papers (Omnitrack, Diary study)
  • Assign chapters for theory madness in week 2

Week 2: Theory Madness (1/10)

Objective: Grasp the overall concepts of the textbook in one day

  • Each participant is allocated one chapter of the textbook, and should present the overview of the chapter.
  • The presentation should assume audiences without any prior knowledge
  • The presentation should be within 8 minutes including Q & A
  • All other HCIL members can also join this session

Week 3: Set Research Topic & Write Draft Proposal (1/17)

  • Participants will be devided into 3 groups this day.
  • Each group should decide one tentative research topic, and write project proposal
    • The topic must involve qualitative data collection and analysis
  • During the week, Youngho Kim will review the proposal

Week 4: Present Project Proposal (1/24)

  • Present the project proposal that reflects Youngho Kim's feedback

During week 5 ~ 7, each group should proceed with the project on their own.
