Weird issue with Azure Data Studio #811

Hi

I am seeing a strange issue with updating Azure Data Studio.
I have installed the System Installer from Microsoft. It has installed in Program Files and has a uninstall entry in HKLM in registry.
When I run Winget-Autoupdate however, it doesn't attempt to update in System Context but in User Context instead. I can see it in the log.
This in turn creates a UAC prompt for the update which will require Admin rights to run.
I have double checked and triple checked but can't work out why this is happening.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times using Winget and --scope machine to be sure.
Also tried a Mod to see if that would help but no dice.
I'm not sure if this is because the installer itself has been written wrong with an oversight, or whether Winget Auto-update is missing something new from this type of installer.

I can live without it working, just would be nice to know what's going on in case I could do something different.

Is there an easy way to find any incorrect flags for this and erase them?

I don't understand what you mean with this, here's the manifest:

Maybe try checking the name in your GPO-list making sure no space is finding its way in and adding an extra app after the Microsoft.AzureDataStudio

We are also having this issue. The one complicating factor for us is that Azure Data Studio was not installed with Winget initially. We are working on transitioning our installs and updating to use Winget/Winget-AutoUpdate. We are early in pilot but both of the machines that have Azure Data Studio are getting the user install downloading even though it is installed in C:\Program Files\ using the system wide installer. Is there a way to force Winget-AutoUpdate to use the "-scope machine" option when installing or updating something? It doesn't seem like the mods would be the right place.

WAU already runs with -scope machine via the system settings.json for winget when it upgrades in SYSTEM context.

I thought that was the case but this issue made me question it. Up until last night I was always logged in when it ran so I thought maybe that was triggering the switch to a user install but I made sure I logged out last night before the update ran overnight and it failed then as well. The log doesn't show what the filename of the installer was, but it failed to install so I assume it was attempting to run the user install.

Diagnosis:
Option A
I could recommend recording all steps leading to that UAC prompt using procmon64 (sysinternals) that way the name of the culprit and all actions leading to that error could be found in a rather big event log (expect GBs of data captured on C: , roughly 2x10^6 events / minute)

Option B
if that is happening in a managed environment, checking event logs on a problematic system:

UAC event log
PowerShell event log
AppLocker/ audit logs
that could work as well.

In the meantime MS released a newer version: 1.51.0

It has started working correctly now when auto updating to 1.51.0.
I won't ask questions about why as I'm just happy it's working.
Microsoft probably did something with the installer I guess, or could have even been a recent Windows Update that fixed the context issue.
Auto updated from 1.50.0 to 1.51.1 so i tested 1.48.1 to 1.51.1 and worked as well.
