Generally to potential contributors: I understand that fread.c is one of the hardest pieces of C to work on (for example), especially now that it's multi-threaded. But I would have thought that would make it more attractive to learn C and contribute to, for the very reason it is impressive; e.g. enhancing your CV.
I would prefer to help someone else do it (sep2), than do it myself.

Are there any plans to actually implement this in the forseeable future? I have a use case that could really use this, and looking at the documentation I initially thought that this was in the works for the next release or something. But it seems that the argument has been present, documented, and completely nonfunctional for 6 years?

I am not aware of anyone actively working on it, so unless you would like to implement this feature, I don't think it will be added to anytime soon.
