<title>The Invertible Matrix Theorem</title>

<p>This section consists of a single important theorem containing many equivalent conditions for a matrix to be invertible. This is one of the most important theorems in this textbook. We will append two more criteria in <xref ref="eigenvectors"/>.</p>

Let <m>A</m> be an <m>n\times n</m> matrix, and let <m>T\colon\R^n\to\R^n</m> be the matrix transformation <m>T(x) = Ax</m>. The following statements are equivalent:

<li><m>A</m> is invertible.</li>
<li><m>A</m> has <m>n</m> pivots.</li>
<li><m>\Nul(A) = \{0\}</m>.</li>
<li>The columns of <m>A</m> are linearly independent.</li>
<li>The columns of <m>A</m> span <m>\R^n</m>.</li>
<li><m>Ax=b</m> has a unique solution for each <m>b</m> in <m>\R^n</m>.</li>
<li><m>T</m> is invertible.</li>
<li><m>T</m> is one-to-one.</li>
<li><m>T</m> is onto.</li>

<proof>
<p>
<m>(1\iff 2)</m>: The matrix <m>A</m> has <m>n</m> pivots if and only if its reduced row echelon form is the identity matrix <m>I_n</m>. This happens exactly when the <xref ref="matrix-inv-how-to-compute">procedure</xref> to compute the inverse succeeds.
</p>
<p>
<m>(2\iff 3)</m>:
The null space of a matrix is <m>\{0\}</m> if and only if the matrix has no free variables, which means that every column is a pivot column, which means <m>A</m> has <m>n</m> pivots. See this <xref ref="subspaces-span-nullspace">recipe</xref>.

<m>(2\iff 4,\,2\iff 5)</m>:
These follow from this <xref ref="linindep-matrix-cols">recipe</xref> and this <xref ref="matrixeq-thm-full-span"/>, respectively, since <m>A</m> has <m>n</m> pivots if and only if has a pivot in every row/column.

<m>(4+5\iff 6)</m>:
We know <m>Ax=b</m> has at least one solution for every <m>b</m> if and only if the columns of <m>A</m> span <m>\R^n</m> by this <xref ref="matrix-trans-onto"/>, and <m>Ax=b</m> has at most one solution for every <m>b</m> if and only if the columns of <m>A</m> are linearly independent by this <xref ref="matrix-trans-one-to-one"/>. Hence <m>Ax=b</m> has exactly one solution for every <m>b</m> if and only if its columns are linearly independent and span <m>\R^n</m>.

To reiterate, the invertible matrix theorem means:

There are two kinds of <em>square</em> matrices:

<li>invertible matrices, and</li>
<li>non-invertible matrices.</li>

For invertible matrices, all of the statements of the invertible matrix theorem are true.

<p>
The following conditions are also equivalent to the invertibility of a square matrix <m>A</m>. They are all simple restatements of conditions in the invertible matrix theorem.
</p>

<li>The reduced row echelon form of <m>A</m> is the identity matrix <m>I_n</m>.</li>
<li><m>Ax=0</m> has no solutions other than the trivial one.</li>
<li><m>\nullity(A) = 0</m>.</li>
<li>The columns of <m>A</m> form a basis for <m>\R^n</m>.</li>
<li><m>Ax=b</m> is consistent for all <m>b</m> in <m>\R^n</m>.</li>
<li><m>\Col(A) = \R^n.</m></li>
<li><m>\dim\Col(A) = n.</m></li>
<li><m>\rank(A) = n.</m></li>

Now we can show that to check <m>B = A\inv</m>, it's enough to show <m>AB=I_n</m> <em>or</em> <m>BA=I_n</m>.

<title>A Left or Right Inverse Suffices</title>

Let <m>A</m> be an <m>n\times n</m> matrix, and suppose that there exists an <m>n\times n</m> matrix <m>B</m> such that <m>AB=I_n</m> <em>or</em> <m>BA=I_n</m>. Then <m>A</m> is invertible and <m>B = A\inv</m>.

Suppose that <m>AB = I_n</m>. We claim that <m>T(x)=Ax</m> is onto. Indeed, for any <m>b</m> in <m>\R^n</m>, we have

b = I_nb = (AB)b = A(Bb),

so <m>T(Bb) = b</m>, and hence <m>b</m> is in the range of <m>T</m>. Therefore, <m>A</m> is invertible by the <xref ref="imt-1"/>. Since <m>A</m> is invertible, we have

so <m>B = A\inv.</m>

Now suppose that <m>BA = I_n</m>. We claim that <m>T(x) = Ax</m> is one-to-one. Indeed, suppose that <m>T(x) = T(y)</m>. Then <m>Ax = Ay</m>, so <m>BAx = BAy</m>. But <m>BA = I_n</m>, so <m>I_nx = I_ny</m>, and hence <m>x=y</m>. Therefore, <m>A</m> is invertible by the <xref ref="imt-1"/>. One shows that <m>B = A\inv</m> as above.
