The Problem

Currently room history visibility can only be seen in the room settings. I seldom have need to go there and I would like to see it somewhere more easily so I can avoid finding myself from public archives (such as matrix-public-archive or matrix-static).

The Solution

I would like to see some sort of icon like the emoji 📣 (megaphone) somewhere and I have two places in mind in order of preference:

  • Next to the room name and topic on the right where I can show/hide pinned messages, see the user list, search for messages and the hamburger menu.
    • On hover it could display explanation of the room being visible by anyone.
    • On click it could take me to room settings anchored on the history visibility section.
  • The icon could also be in the room list with the avatar, name, latest speaker and their name. However I don't think it's either natural or logical place to it (as opposed to next to the pin button which at least in my mind is a loosely related context).

Alternatives

  • The main alternative is simply never speaking or opening rooms which the user hasn't created by themselves.
  • The user could also keep a list of what is what option in which rooms and most recently updated, but this seems even more difficult/unsustainable than the previous option.
  • I am curious in seeing what Element will do, Room history visibility is not explicit enough element-hq/element-meta#1807.

Additional context

The previously mentioned Matrix Static (aka view.matrix.org) only displays public rooms and the also mentioned Matrix Archive is also moving to that direction, matrix-org/matrix-viewer#276.

This issue is a continuation of #1470 where it was previously discussed.

Happens in the latest version

  • Yes, this feature is still missing.
