07 Chapter: Data Storytelling & Visualization
Class Rresources:
Storytelling Resources This unit focuses on exploratory data analysis (EDA) and includes segments from a renowned Harvard University data science course. You’ll learn how communication skills are critical to effective data storytelling and how data storytellers play an important role in data science careers. Telling a good story will also make your portfolio pop, and hiring managers often state that data storytelling is a highly desirable and hard-to-find skill. By the end of the unit, you’ll be able to tell data stories in your capstone project and get feedback from your mentor and peers.
1 Video: Exploratory Data Analysis Students typically spend 1.5 - 2 Hours
This Harvard University lecture explains how Exploratory Data Analysis is a critical skill in understanding a data set and communicating insights to clients. As you watch the video, pay close attention to the five principles of effective visualizations (33:00) and the flowchart that help you pick the best method in different situations (43:00). 2 Video: Storytelling and Effective Communication Students typically spend 1.5 - 2 Hours
Stories are a universal mode of communication and understanding for people around the world. Data science is not only about the data and the algorithms but also about the story you tell with the data. A good data scientist produces top-notch analysis and explains to clients how the analysis can be used.
In this Harvard University lecture, you’ll learn the fundamentals of good storytelling.
This lecture describes how data is presented using storytelling techniques covers key principles (11:00) and considerations (33:00) when creating a good data story. We don’t expect you to create complex infographics like the ones in this lecture, but it’s important to understand the thinking that goes into their creation.
