darwin-rebuild switch --flake ~/.config/nix is trying to create a system link in the store

I've been trying to rebuild for the past 2 days, but I keep getting this error.

> darwin-rebuild switch --flake ~/.config/nix
building the system configuration...
error: creating a garbage collector root (/nix/store/sw2drbnr56jq8rmcisqmqxq258dq62rx-system-1-link) in the Nix store is forbidden (are you running nix-build inside the store?)

I'm currently on "system-60", so it should be creating /nix/var/nix/profiles/system-61-link.

When I rebooted, /run/current-system/ had completely vanished. I've created a symlink with ln -snf "$(realpath /nix/var/nix/profiles/system)" /run/current-system to access system packages in the meantime.
