Fail to upgrade from v4.8 to v5.0+

Hi,

I try to follow the update guide to update from v4.8.0 (i.e., the old Academic Kickstarter template) to v5.0+.

I have already installed Hugo Extended and its dependencies as descried in here. The versions of Hugo and go are v0.95.0+extended and go1.18, respectively.
I came across a problem when I was trying to convert my site to use Hugo Modules following this guide:

To update config/_default/config.toml, I have

• removed theme = "academic"
• added the following code to the end of the file

[module]
  [[module.imports]]
    path = "github.com/wowchemy/wowchemy-hugo-themes/netlify-cms-academic"
  [[module.imports]]
    path = "github.com/wowchemy/wowchemy-hugo-themes/wowchemy"

just as the guide said.

However, when I ran hugo mod init my-site to create a go.mod file, an error occurred:

WARN 2022/03/22 19:38:37 module "github.com/wowchemy/wowchemy-hugo-themes/wowchemy" not found; either add it as a Hugo Module or store it in "/Users/EckoTan/Documents/academic-kickstart/themes".: module does not exist
go: creating new go.mod: module my-site
go: to add module requirements and sums:
	go mod tidy

I have been stuck due to this problem for a couple hours. Any help will be greatly appreciated 🙏! Thanks in advance!

The Hugo Module system required us to make further changes since then, to incorporate the major version (v5) in the module path.

You can find the latest module paths for go.mod and config.yaml/toml in the latest starter templates or at https://wowchemy.com/docs/hugo-tutorials/update/

If upgrading from quite an old version, you may find it much easier to start fresh with one of the latest starter templates, edit the new config/ files to your liking, and then gradually migrate your content and domain across: https://wowchemy.com/hugo-themes/

Thanks for your quick response!

If I start fresh with the latest starter templates and gradually migrate my content from my old site, can I still use the same domain as before? (I used Netlify to deploy my site)
