Soneto de Londres

Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) was a Brazilian poet, lyricist, playwright and essayist. He is widely known for his beautiful folk verses in Portuguese and his contribution to the Bossa Nova music genre. The sonnet was written in 1939, pre-war London, when Moraes was visiting the city as a 24-year-old student at Oxford University. The mingled expressions of estranged solicitude, anguish and horror is arguably the fruit of his expatriate nostalgia and premonition on the forthcoming bombing by the German planes on the city's skyline.

Vinicius de Moraes. The place described is not clearly indicated, yet according to Moraes's article (link included below), it is probably about the central London area between the Piccadilly Circus sidewalk and Bond Street.

Original Lyrics

SONETO DE LONDRES

Londres , 1939

Que angústia estar sozinho na tristeza

E na prece! que angústia estar sozinho

Imensamente, na inocência! acesa

A noite, em brancas trevas o caminho

Da vida, e a solidão do burburinho

Unindo as almas frias à beleza

Da neve vã; oh, tristemente assim

O sonho, neve pela natureza!

Irremediável, muito irremediável

Tanto como essa torre medieval

Cruel, pura, insensível, inefável

Torre; que angústia estar sozinho! ó alma

Que ideal perfume, que fatal

Torpor te despetala a flor do céu?

Translated Lyrics

SONNET OF LONDON

London, 1939

What anguish it is, to be alone in sadness

with prayers! What anguish it is, the immense

solitude of innocence! Illuminated

Night bleached the pathways from the darkness

From the routine, the lonely whispers

Are uniting the cold souls with the beauty

Of snow's emptiness; oh, sadness such as these

Dreams, snow in the form of nature!

Irremediable, so irremediable

As this medieval tower,

Cruel, pure, insensible, ineffable.

Tower; what anguish it is, to be alone! Oh soul,

What imagined scent, what fatal

lethargy plucked the celestial bloom from you?
