We can also send notifications when the release reaches alpha, beta or stable and give people the option to customise which channel they want to be notified about.

It could use something like unifiedpush support for lighter battery usage or just occasionally check for updates in the background (every hour?) The time between checks could be configurable in settings next to where the toggle for notifications would be. Occasional checking would probably the preffered option as it won't require another app to function, and wouldn't require something constantly running in the background and sipping battery.
Another setting could be enabling notifications when a version is pushed from one release channel to another (alpha -> beta, beta -> stable) with a "2024XXXXXX has been pushed to beta/stable from alpha/beta". Ideally these notifications would be disabled by default but it would be nice to users who want more info on releases or are anticipating a specific version being pushed to their brancb (e.g. New android version release, or a feature you are excited for).
