Fails with "state.src.replace" is not a function #42

I can build my site just fine, but when I enable metalsmith-watch, each time I change a file, metalsmith-watch fails with this error:

[metalsmith-watch] ✔︎ layouts/page.pug changed
[metalsmith-watch] - Updating 5 files...
[metalsmith-watch] ✗ TypeError: state.src.replace is not a function

I'd be happy to help debug this, but unless I'm doing something wrong, I can't get metalsmith-watch to output debug messages (I tried DEBUG=metalsmith-watch metalsmith).

Any insight into this issue? It appears to persist.
