Once we've moved the tests from Travis (#68), we should start improving the tests due to all the recent changes.

In order to get a clean starting point (i.e. tests pass) I've some adjustments to external objects in 06203e2. Still need to:

Improve external object tests (e.g. names in associated data products are currently very fake)
Adjustments to external object tests once the new changes have been committed
Testing of object components needs to be improved (due to the addition of the automatic whole_object component)
Test deployment of local registry

(this is not yet an exhaustive list!!)
