Would it be possible to screen a Desktop or web page perhaps in linux? I've done this with an AppleTV open source implementation before.

A webpage is "kinda" possible.
I've set up a 1280x720 webpage and then I use "cutycapt" to make a screenshot of it. The resulting PNG is then casted to the ChromeCast.
