Overview

A vulnerability has been discovered that makes it possible to read arbitrary files from the Motorola MX011ANM set-top box.



Affected Platforms

Motorola MX011ANM, firmware version MX011AN_2.9p6s1_PROD_sey



Proof-of-Concept

The Motorola MX011ANM includes a diagnostic display that can be accessed by pressing "EXIT, Down, Down, 2" on an RF4CE remote.

When this diagnostic display is active, it is possible to execute a known script using the Remote Web Inspector in order to read arbitrary files.

Mitigation

There is no apparent mechanism to allow Comcast customers to change this behavior.



Recommended Remediation

Restrict access to the Remote Web Inspector, and restrict the scope of the known script.
